GENEALOGICAL FAMILY LINEAGE CHARTS

Each "Family Lineage Chart" covers the direct line of descent for each family name from the earliest identified direct ancestor (grandparent) to the present. The number before each parent "pair" represents the number of generations back from the present of that pair while the number immediately before the surname of the lineal ancestor in each "pair" represents the number of generations that individual is a descendent from either the original emigrant from Europe to America (if known) or from the earliest identified ancestor. Lineal ancestors preceding the original emigrant are identified by a "negative" number with the lineal parent of the first emigrant numbered as "1". Bracketed numbers after surnames refer to footnotes at the bottom of each chart.

Where there is more than one direct line of descent from a single original ancestor because of the marriage of cousins, etc., there is a separate Chart for each line which is designated in the heading as "[Line via (name)]".

Years which are not known, known only approximately, or not confirmed are in italics. If only the century is known, the last two digits are replaced by X's (14XX, 15XX, etc). Years may also follow a prefix which means the following:

arr=Arrived in America bf=before af=after abt=about

arrbf=Arrived in America before arraf=Arrived in America after

arrabt=Arrived in America about m.=Married b.=Born (living only)

The year of first arrival in America of emigrants from Europe is indicated in bold face between the years of birth and death of each emigrant. The lineal ancestor in each parent "pair" is also identified by bold face type. The number in brackets after the family name at the top of each chart represents the last ancestral generation in which the "family" surname appears while the year noted to the right of that number is the birthyear of the earliest identified ancestor in each family line.

State designations (i.e. MA, ME, PA, etc) in footnotes refer to the current State in which the location is which may be different than the name of the State or Colony at the time referred to in the footnote.

Bogardus had excommunicated) to the Assembly, Classis of Amsterdam, on which the Brethern of Indian Affairs postponed action until the return of Rev. Bogardus to Amsterdam, April 7, 1636; Requests of Council at Nieuw Amsterdam to "return to Fatherland to defend himself against charges" but Council "deemed it necessary to retain the Minister so that the Church of God may increase more and more every day", July 8, 1638; Lubb. van Dincklagen asks Classis of Amsterdam to relieve him of his excommunication, March 9, 1640; Relentlessly opposes Gov. Bogardus which he refuses to receive or open and returns by court messenger, March 23, 1645; Rev. Bogardus summoned to "appear before the Council and answer charges", June 11, 1646; Ordered to "deliver to Council a Bill of Exchange given by the Swedish Governor at the South River for goods sold there contrary to Law", September 21, 1646; Sailed for Amsterdam on the ship, "Princess", with Gov. Kieft who both perished when it sank in a storm off the coast of Wales drowning 81 of the 100 persons aboard, September 27, 1647.

[1a] Anneke  JANS: Emigrated from Holland to New Netherland with her husband, Roeloff Jansen, in 1630. In 1636 the latter obtained a grant of 62 acres of land on Manhattan Island , extending from the present Warren Street to the neighborhood of Desbrosses Street, and lying between Broadway and the Hudson River. Soon afterwards Jansen died, and she married the Dutch dominic Everardus Bogardus (q.v.) and the farm became known as the "Domine's Bouwerie."  In 1654,  after her husband's death, she secured a patent to the farm in her own name, and later removed to Albany, where she died, leaving her property to be divided among her eight surviving children.

After the English had taken possession, in 1664, all property-holders were required to secure new titles for their lands. Accordingly, the heirs secured a new patent for the farm from Governor Nicolls, on March 27, 1667. Four years later, March 9, 1671, the property was sold to Governor Lovelace, all of the heirs signing the deed of transfer except the wife and child of Cornelius Bogardus, a son of Anneke and her second husband, who had died in 1666. It is largely upon this omission that the subsequent suits have been based. Upon the recall of Governor Lovelace (q.v.), the Government confiscated the Jans farm, and subsequently granted it to Trinity Church by a patent sealed on November 23, 1705. In 1749 Cornelius Brower, a descendant of the Cornelius Bogardus whose heirs had not signed, took forcible possession of a portion of the farm, and on being evicted began an action against Trinity Church, which was decided against him. In 1757 he made another unsuccessful attempt. Another Cornelius Bogardus took possession of part of the estate in 1784, and held it until he was evicted by the courts in 1786. His son John brought suit in 1830 to secure one-thirtieth of the farm and a proportionate share of back rents. In order to secure the money necessary to carry on this suit, he sent circulars to all the descendants of Anneke Jans asking them to contribute, which they did most liberally untill 1847, when judgment was again given for the church.

Since then there have been several other suits brought by the heirs, but they have been uniformly decided in favor of the defendants. Samuel3 TREAT: Graduated from Harvard College, 1669; Ordained, 1675; Minister, Eastham, MA (originally Nauset)  from 1672 until his death on March 18, 1716-17.  He was remembered as preaching hell fire and damnation. "His voice was so loud that when speaking it could be heard at a great distance from the meetinghouse, even in the midst of the winds that howled over the plains of Nauset." Rev.Treat learned the language of the Indians and preached to them with missionary zeal over a wide area of Cape Cod. The large original slate headstone of Rev. Treat was stolen in the 1800's. It was replaced in the late 1800's with a marble headstone which was in style at the time. This marble stone is paired with the original slate footstone of Rev. Treat. A cedar tree grows over his grave. The original headstone later was found in a barn in Orleans. It was placed in Snow Library in Orleans for safe keeping where it was destroyed by fire in 1952.

[8] Joseph4 TREAT: First TREAT to permanently settle in Boston, 1713-20, 1727-56; Gunsmith.

[9] Lt. Joshua5 TREAT: Born Sept. 22, 1729, in Boston; died Aug. 12 (17, Prospect records), 1802, it Prospect, Me.; married, first, Dec. 9, 1755, Catharine James, born 1735,  died May 4, 1790, and daughter of William and Catharine (Cunningham) James, of Fort George's, now Warren, Me. Mr. James died Oct. 20, 1790, aged eighty-one, and was one of the first Scotch Irish settlers on George's river, the Indian name of which was Georgeekee. For his second wife he married Dec. 25, 1793, by Benjamin Shute, Esq., Mrs. Polly Lancaster, spelled Lankster in the Prospect records, where she resided. Mr. Treat was a gunsmith by trade.

He was at Fort George's as early as Aug., 1750, and perhaps a little earlier. The fort was erected in 1719-20. His name first appears on the pay roll of Capt. Jabez Bradbury's company, Aug. 30, 1750-June 16, 1753, as armorer, at 66s. 8d. wages per month. In 1757, the pay was reduced to 40s. A treaty with the Eastern Indians was ratified at this fort, Oct. 20, 1752, which was witnessed to by thirty-two persons, among whom was Joshua Treat. [See Annals of the Town of Warren, by George Eaton.] Mr. Treat has also furnished an account of a conference with the Indians, dated St. George's, July 27, 1757, on which occasion he acted as sworn interpreter of the Indian language. [Mass. Archives, 82:777.]

On Feb. 2, 1759, the committee, appointed by the General Court to consider Governor Pownall's message, reported that it was expedient to build a fort on the Penobscot, and that when built, the forts at St. George's and Pemaquid should be dismantled, and the garrisons removed to the Penobscot. Accordingly an expedition was fitted out for the work, which left Boston, May 4, 1759, accompanied by the governor. It touched at Falmouth, now Portland, where it remained a few days, leaving on the eighth. On the ninth it arrived at George's river, where it received on board a part of the garrison there, a portion marching for the Penobscot by land. On the seventeenth, the expiedition reached Fort Point Harbor, now Stockton Springs. The building of a fort was commenced at once. The governor embarked for home on the twenty-sixth, and arrived at Castle William, Boston harbor, on the twenty-eighth. The fort was completed about July 6, at a cost of nearly £5,000 and named Fort Pownall, in honor of the governor. [See Governor Pownall's Journal, Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 38, A, pp. 305-321; Williamson's Hist, of Maine, pp. 335-339, Vol. 2. and his Hist, of the City or Belfast, chapter 4, p. 56, for a cut of this fort, as it is supposed to have appeared; N. E. Hist, and Genealogical Reg., Vol. XIII, p. 167-8 ; XIV, pp. 4-10.]

In the rolls of Capt. George Berry's company, at Fort Pownall, is name of Joshua Treat as ensign from April 1-July 16, 1759. at £2 10s. per month [Mass. Archives, 97; 213]. From July 16, 1759-May 31, 1774, he was armorer; Jan. 20, 1764, his pay was raised from 40s. to 50s., and July 20, 1766, increased to 70s.; from July 29, 1766-May 31, 1774, it was only 80s. He probably continued to serve as armorer after the breaking out of the Revolution, for he is spoken of in a public document [Mass. Archives, 208:355], as acting in that capacity. Although there is no record that he ever held any higher rank than that of ensign, by then he was always called Lieut. Joshua Treat. From July 26, 1765-June 2, 1766, he acted ns Indian interpreter, with Thomas Fletcher, at £3 per month.

According to tradition, Joshua Treat was the first permanent white settler on the Penobscot.    Whipple says:

"During this year [1759] Lieut. Joshua Treat arrived at this fort, in a ship from Boston loaded with government stores for the fort; where lie remained and was the first actual settler on the Penobscot river."    [Geographical view of the district of Maine, p. 81.]

But Mr. Treat did not come direct from Boston. He came from St. George's, and was not lieutenant, but armorer. It is also a tradition that in May, 1759, he paddled up the river in a canoe with Governor Pownall, and landed on the banks of Sowadabscook stream in Hampden, where lie acted as interpreter in a conference held with the Tarratino Indians, a warlike race, and introduced the governor to the old chief Modocowanda.

Dec. 17, 1760, the following petition was directed to the General Court, by Mr. Treat [Mass. Archives, 79 : 332] :

"The Petition of Joshua Treat
                                                       Humbly shews,

That he has been in the service of this Province as Armorer of the Fort at St, Georges upwards of Ten Years, & endeavoured to discharge his Duty faithfully, and at the time said Fort consisted of thirty men he receiv'd Three pounds per month. That when Fort Pownal was Built your Petr was removed there, and altho' the establishment of said Fort consisted of one hundred men, & he has the care & trouble of the like Number of Arms, your Petrs Pay instead of being inlarged in proportion to his care & trouble is reduced to Forty shillings per month, which he finds too small an allowance for his support.

"That in the month of August 1759, your Petr was taken sick at Fort Pownal & as no Physician was there he was removed to St. Georges & there continued sick under the Physicians care eleven Weeks & his sickness continuing he was removed from thence to Boston where he was confin'd under the Physicians care seven weeks longer during the which time he never received any Garrison or Hospital allowance. That the necessary Charges & Expenses for Board, medecine & attendance during said Sickness amounted to upwards eleven Pounds lawful money, which he is obliged to Pay, and as Your Petr was in the Province Service at the time of his sickness & no Provision was made for the sick, He humbly Prays Your Excellency & Honours consideration of his Case, & that a reasonable Addition may be made to his Wages, and also that an allowance may be made him for the charges of his sickness.

And Your Petr as in Duty Bound will Pray &c.

                                                                                                    Joshua Treat"

Treat signaturw

Fort Pownall, near where Mr. Treat settled, was originally in the town of Frankfort, now Stockton Springs. Frankfort was incorporated June 29, 1789, and extended from Belfast line to Wheeler's mills. Was originally a very large town, but has been divided into several towns. Prospect was set off and incorporated Feb. 24,1794 ; Searsport was incorporated Feb, 13, 1845, which took a little from Belfast; Stockton was incorporated March 13,1857 (the name has since been changed to Stockton Springs), and Winterport in 1860. Mr. Treat's lot was near the head of Fort Point Cove, just above Stockton village, and was divided by the county road. His house was on the southeasterly comer of the lot, about two miles due north of Fort Pownall, where a part of the cellar is still visible. The dimensions are about 40 by 25 feet. His grave, unmarked by any monument, is nearer the shore. His sons Robert and James inherited the lot. the former the northerly half. During the Revolution Mr. Treat moved bis family to Camden, but soon returned.

One of Mr. Treat's account books came in the possession of Edwin P. Treat, of Frankfort. It consists of 241 pages. The lower part of the book has been much injured by damp, and & few of the leaves have been torn out. The name of Joshua Treat is on the first page, and on the inside of the cover opposite, the word Fort Pownall, is written several times. It was opened in 1764 and extended to 1767, but the once vacant spaces have been filled up with entries from 1754 to 1797, some of them taken from a previous book. In the earlier entries the penmanship is very good, and everything shows that Mr. Treat understood book-keeping. Later on the writing is not so good or so carefully done.

Besides being armorer at the fort, he kept a store containing such articles as were needed in the settlement, as rum, meal, molasses, pork, moose moat, tobacco, flip, coffee, shoes, various kinds of dry goods, etc. He was also probably the only mechanic in the neighborhood and did all kinds of blacksmith work, making bolts, tempering axes, mending guns, repairing steel traps, and forging the iron work for vessels. He did some trading with his cousin Samuel Treat in Boston, of the firm of Treat & Pico. As early as 1765, he owned a farm which he leased to Abner Lowell under certain conditions, page 51. On page 231, is "the Indian account," which contains this entry among others:  "Lent Sabbatis Atteon a trap for the fall Hunt which he is to pay me £4.0.0." On page 148, under date or "Oct. ye 10, 1797," is this curious entry: "This Day Rickoned and settled with my son Josh" Treat all accounts Debts Dues and Demands from the Begining of the World to this day and received payment in full of forty shillings Lawful money.

as Witness my Hand

                              Joshua Treat."

Oct. 7, 1767, he paid Thomas Cooper for "schooling my 2 children £10," page 83. The book contains the names of many of the early settlers and is valuable on that account. Mr. Treat was a man of great energy and enterprise. His silver ware far exceeded that of any other settler on the river.

The first trace of the ancestry of this American branch of the Treats—spelled Trott, Trot, Tret, Treate—is found in the Roman settlements of Taunton, Somerset, England. The old calendars and registers in Taunton Manor Court Rolls have almost entirely perished and the records of Vital Statistics, which Queen Elizabeth commanded to be made, were started only about twenty-five years before the birth of Honorable Richard Treate, son of Honors and Robert Trot (Trat), who was the son of Richard and Joanna Trot, of Somerset. Records exist in Pitminster Church, Somerset, England. This Richard Treat, who was baptized August 28, 1584, and died in 1669, brought his family to New England, in 1636, and settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He was granted nine hundred acres on the Connecticut River, including the "Farm of Nayog." By later grants and purchases he accumulated two thousand acres, eight houses and barns on High Street. Champion, in his history, states: "There was no assumption of dignity on the part of the Treat family; it was accorded to them as a right." Richard Treat was Royal Charterer of Connecticut, in 1662, by special request of Connecticut Colony; one of Governor Winthrop's special [p.248] councils, 1663-1664; magistrate and assistant-governor, 1657-1665; deputy to General Court, 1644-1657; represented Wethersfield in obtaining funds for support of Harvard College.

Richard Treate married on April 16, 1618, Alice Gaylord, daughter of Hugh Gaillard, Huguenot refugee from Normandy to England, whose first home was St. Joseph's Chapel, Glastonbury Abbey (see Castle Gaillard, Normandy). (2) Their son, Governor Robert Treat (1624-1710), was Royal Governor and Deputy Governor of Connecticut for thirty-two years. He was president of the United Colonies of New England in 1684 and for many years held the highest civil and military offices in the gift of the American Colonies and their kings, who addressed him as their "trusted and well beloved Governor Treat." He was Royal Councillor and often Commissioner. Bancroft, in a letter in his own handwriting, stated that he wished to include in his history the letters between Governor Treat and the English kings and queens but lack of time and funds prevented. Robert Treat was Colonel of all Connecticut troops, Chief-in-Command of the Rear in King Philip's War and was a determining factor in seven colonies: New Haven, Plymouth, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Long Island and New Jersey—going to their defense with his troops when they were attacked by the Indians or threatened by the Dutch. This remarkable man was often one of Governor Carteret's special council in New Jersey. He was also founder of Newark, New Jersey. He was granted many thousands of acres and was original proprietor of many towns. He held until his death all kinds of elective and appointive offices. He was governor at the time Andros demanded from him personally the surrender of the Charter. All the other colonies, including London, had surrendered theirs but he diplomatically delayed for over two years. When Andros came by force to get it, Governor Treat, to prevent formal surrender and record thereof, resorted to the famous ruse of having Captain Wadsworth spirit it to the Charter Oak hiding place. When Andros was deposed, Governor Treat's proclamation to the sovereigns William and Mary that the Charter had never been surrendered, hence no record thereof existed, was upheld by English courts, and enabled Connecticut to continue under that Charter for over one hundred years, until the adoption of the new constitution in 1818. Robert Treat married, in 1645, Jane Tapp, daughter of Honorable Edmund Tapp, Magistrate and Assistant Governor. (3) Reverend Samuel Treat (1648-1716), eldest son of Governor Robert and Jane Tapp Treat was graduated from Harvard College in 1669. This Reverend Samuel Treat of Eastham, Massachusetts, translated the Bible into Indian dialects. He was chosen to preach the election sermons in Boston. He was married (1) on March 16, 1674, to Elizabeth Mayo (d. 1696), daughter of Captain Samuel Mayo, a purchaser of Oyster Bay, Long Island, in 1653, and son of Reverend John, of Boston. Their son (4) Joseph Treat (1696-1756), married, in 1713, Mary Larkin (daughter of Edward, son of John Larkin and wife, Joanna Hale, daughter of Deacon Robert Hale of Charlestown, Massachusetts, an ancestor of Nathan Hale). Their son (5) Lieutenant Joshua Treat (1729-1802), of Revolutionary War fame, married, in 1755 (1) Catherine James (1729-1790). His silverware exceeded any in the Province of Maine. (6) Their son, Joshua Treat, Junior (1756-1826), married in 1780, Lydia Buck, daughter of Colonel Buck (Revolutionary War). (7) Their son, Jonathon Treat (1787-1867), fought in the War of 1812 and married, in 1812, Deborah Parker (1795-1857), daughter of Oliver Parker (Revolutionary War). Their son (8) Captain Henry Treat (1817-1887), married, in 1840, his second cousin, Abigail Treat, daughter of Colonel Egna Treat and Harriet McIntire. This Henry Treat was famed as a wit and a raconteur. He was a graduate of Kents Hill and Bates Colleges. With his brothers [p.249] he owned twenty-eight vessels engaged in export and import from the West Indies. Understanding the Spanish language and people, his friend Hannibal Hamlin, Vice-President of the United States, offered to appoint him ambassador to Spain, but ill health prevented. (10) Honorable Charles Henry Treat, son of Captain Henry and Abigail Treat, was Treasurer of the United States in Roosevelt's administration. He was graduated from Bates College and Dartmouth College and was a member of the Union League Club, of New York, of the Order of Colonial Governors, Director of General Grant Monument Association. The Honorable Henry Treat was an eloquent orator. Henry Treat married Frances Emily Huxford. Their children were Mabel, Gail (i.e. Abigail), and Gertrude Treat.
